Project Highlight

Bayer Becker’s urban design experience and familiarity with the City of Covington were important in the design and construction of the Covington Latin School Addition. Bayer Becker had previously provided design services on multiple projects in the city including the neighboring cathedral. The school addition’s urban location brought with it some design challenges. The addition was surrounded by development, including the existing school. Design and construction took place while school was in session, so safety was a key factor. Because of its urban location, utility coordination was another important feature. Bayer Becker’s utility design had to account for existing Cincinnati Bell fiber optic lines running along the site. These lines were encased in concrete, so special care had to be taken to make sure they wouldn’t be damaged. Detention for the site, given its urban location, could have been an issue. However, by coordinating and confirming additional detention wasn’t necessary, Bayer Becker was able to eliminate the need for underground detention, saving money for the client.

The addition’s design and construction were coordinated with roadway improvements and widening that took place on nearby 12th street. In addition to design, Bayer Becker provided assistance with the school board submittal process. Bayer Becker’s design capabilities and experience helped the project stay on schedule and ensured it would be completed on time to coincide with its December 7th dedication, 70 years to the day after the original school building was dedicated.
