The $50 million redevelopment of the former Fountain Place, once anchored by Macy’s, transformed the site into a dynamic mixed-use development aimed at revitalizing one of downtown Cincinnati’s most prominent locations. The 3.5-story structure features 150,000 square feet of office space and 35,000 square feet of street-level retail and restaurant space.

Bayer Becker provided civil engineering services for the project, which included streetscape enhancements such as new curbs, sidewalks, and street trees. Additionally, a road diet was implemented along Race Street, Fifth Street, and Vine Street by removing one lane of on-street parking to widen the sidewalks and improve pedestrian flow. A major challenge was relocating traffic signals with the new curb locations to ensure the foundations didn’t conflict with the existing utilities. Another key challenge involved grading the restaurant patio, as the building’s finished floor elevation was lower than the street level. Because of the design team’s extensive urban redevelopment experience, they were able to navigate these challenges and deliver a safe and engaging streetscape.
