Project Highlight
A fixture and landmark of Mount Adams throughout the history of Cincinnati, Holy Cross Monastery and Church underwent a significant renovation and evolution in use in late 2014. Given the unique location and site challenges, Bayer Becker was selected to provide surveying, civil engineering, construction documentation, construction administration and project management services by Towne Properties. In addition to the venue’s new use as an event space, the facility also includes Towne Properties’ corporate office which was renovated simultaneously. The Bayer Becker team collaborated with landscape architect and garden designer, Human Nature, along with Herndon Engineering (MEP), Towne Properties (Construction Manager/Client) and Townescapes (contractor) to compliment the historic landmark with engaging garden space. Bayer Becker was responsible for ensuring that there were clear lines of communication between all parties involved, that the quality of the installation met expectations, and challenges in the field were being addressed creatively and efficiently.
Bayer Becker first prepared the topographic survey, which served as the base for design drawings, provided the layout, grading plan, and storm water management plans for the garden based upon the design provided by Human Nature. Additionally, Bayer Becker provided construction details including sections and elevations of the ramp, steps, seat walls and paving all the while ensuring collaboration between the design and construction team.
The renovation took place between the winter months of November 2014 and May 2015, requiring an extremely demanding schedule. As project manager, Bayer Becker leveraged its relationship and previous teaming experience with the client and the construction manager to work through any design challenges encountered during the renovation. Bayer Becker also assisted with permitting for the garden and event tents. By recording and organizing RFI correspondence, monitoring the quality of the executed work, and working together with the appropriate entities through construction, Bayer Becker was a critical factor in completing the project on time.
Bayer Becker’s engineering, surveying, construction documentation and construction management services were all leveraged during the project to provide technical drawings that supported the vision for the garden’s design. Our attention to detail during each stage proved to be extremely valuable to the successful completion of the project in time for the first wedding at the Chapel Garden.
