Project Highlight
Miami University – Hamilton saw the need to improve handicap access to Phelps Hall. The existing ramp and steps were slowly deteriorating and did not conform to ADA requirements. Bayer Becker’s design for the new entrance met the University’s needs for a new handicap ramp and seating area. The design also incorporated sustainable design elements into the project, enhanced the aesthetic quality of the entrance and embraced the existing campus master plan. In addition to meeting the University’s needs, the new entrance serves as a key focal point for the campus, terminating two major pedestrian corridors on the campus. Pervious pavers identify the termination of the walks, supported with low freestanding masonry walls and plantings. The radial design ties the entrance to Phelps Hall into the campus pedestrian circulation system, creating an inviting entrance to the building.
