Project Highlight

Anchor Health Properties and St. Elizabeth Healthcare turned to Bayer Becker for design services for the St. Elizabeth Healthcare facility in Covington, Kentucky. The facility is located at the site of an abandoned interchange ramp and presented significant storm water management challenged. the design team was instrumental in facilitating open communication between hospital, City, County, and State officials. The result was successful integration of the project design with the ongoing Main Street realignment public improvement project (with Kenton County and KYTC), which provides direct access to the St. Elizabeth campus.
Cost control was a very important consideration in the overall success of this project. During the initial design phase, site adjustments eliminated the need for a retaining wall. Bayer Becker coordinated the work of multiple design firms and subconsultants with the developer, construction manager, and geotechnical engineer to explore and select an innovative solution to use a light weight fill product that was placed over an existing sewer to provide a critical access point into the site.
As part of a commitment to SD1, the project development team set a goal to incorporate green infrastructure elements into the project including a 20,000 square foot green roof. In addition, four rain gardens and a redesigned detention basin, limit storm water runoff. Bayer Becker’s design team was contracted by SD1 for the basin, which was designed to maximize the potential for soil absorption - reducing the volume of runoff leaving the site.
The combination of green infrastructure and Bayer Becker’s focus on cost sensitive solutions resulted in a medical facility that achieved the goals set forth by SD1 and the City of Covington.
