Project Highlight
Metalex’s expansion of their manufacturing facility located in Blue Ash, Ohio was designed to house an extremely large CNC machine tool and facilitate the delivery of oversized raw materials. With trucks over 150 ft in length making deliveries of raw materials, designing an entrance that could accommodate such a large turning radius was key, along with the grading criteria in the material delivery area. The grading had to be flat enough to maintain a stable base while transferring the materials to the building’s overhead crane which rolled out of the building on rails. Meeting the owner‘s grading criteria while still providing adequate drainage and tying into the pavement surrounding the project on all sides proved to be the main design challenge. Bayer Becker also performed an analysis of the existing detention system onsite and designed modifications to the basins to bring them up to current City of Blue Ash codes, which included meeting post-construction water quality requirements.
In addition to the site design, Bayer Becker also provided precise site construction layout surveying services for both the building addition and the machine tool inside. The building houses a machine used in the fabrication of steel and metal that sits roughly 20 feet in the ground. Surveying for the machine was critical, because the ground had to be excavated before the machine could be set in place. Bayer Becker’s precision allowed the machine to be perfectly set in place. In addition to the machine placement, Bayer Becker’s services ensured Metalex’s addition would align perfectly with their existing facility allowing for ease of connectivity between their current facility and the expansion.
